Intent:
Children will have the confidence to communicate in other languages
Children will have a new and broader perspective on the world, encouraging them to understand and appreciate their own cultures and those of others, building on and enhancing their ‘cultural capital’.
Children’s learning will build on prior knowledge through a progressive, well-sequenced curriculum with clear end point.
Impact:
We aim to support children to develop an interest in and a love of learning languages and be prepared for the next stage of their languages education.
By the end of KS2 Children will be able to:
• Communicate at a basic level with each other in the target language.
• Appreciate how language skills can be applied to a range of languages including their own.
• Be aware that language has structure, and that the structure differs from one language to another.
• Be confident and successful linguists.
Implementation:
French will be taught weekly within KS2, through the ‘Language Angels’ scheme of learning, focusing on the teaching of vocabulary, phonics and grammar.
Learning will build on children’s prior knowledge ensuring children are secure in each area in order to describe people, places, things and actions orally and in writing
Children will speak in sentences, using familiar vocabulary, phrases and basic language structures, develop accurate pronunciation and intonation so that others understand when they are reading aloud or using familiar words and phrases.
Children will understand basic grammar appropriate to the language being studied, including (where relevant): feminine, masculine and neuter forms and the conjugation of high-frequency verbs; key features and patterns of the language; how to apply these, for instance, to build sentences; and how these differ from or are similar to English.
French will be taught in real life contexts, ensuring language learning is meaningful and memorable using song, nursery rhymes, games, video clips and more creative ways of learning.
